Our Nursery

Education
At Unit One Kids, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which sets the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age five. This ensures every child is given the best possible start in life in a setting that is safe, nurturing, and tailored to their individual needs. The EYFS promotes learning through play, hands-on exploration, and meaningful interactions, helping children grow into confident, capable learners.

The framework is built around seven key areas of learning and development, which we integrate into our daily routines and activities:

Key areas of Development:
1. Communication and Language
We support children in developing speaking and listening skills, encouraging conversations, storytelling, and active participation.

2. Physical Development
Through indoor and outdoor play—we help children build coordination, strength, and healthy movement habits.

3. Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
We nurture children’s self-confidence, emotional understanding, and ability to form positive relationships with others.

4. Literacy
From early mark-making to shared reading time, we foster a love of books, stories, and the building blocks of reading and writing.

5. Mathematics
We introduce basic concepts like counting, sorting, patterns, and shape recognition through fun, hands-on activities.

6. Understanding the World
Children explore their surroundings, cultures, and the natural world, building curiosity and making sense of the environment around them.

7. Expressive Arts and Design
We encourage creativity through music, movement, art, and imaginative play, giving children the freedom to express themselves.

By weaving these areas into our daily practice, Unit One Kids ensures each child is supported in every aspect of their early development—laying strong foundations for school and beyond.

Our learning environment
Children learn best through play. Our rooms and outdoor spaces are carefully designed to spark curiosity, imagination, and independence. From construction and creative play to storytelling, outdoor discovery and role-play, every space offers rich opportunities for exploration, friendship, and growth.
Partnership with parents
We believe children flourish when parents and practitioners work together. Daily conversations, progress updates, and parent meetings help us share each child’s journey. Parents are encouraged to get involved, give feedback, and celebrate their child’s achievements with us.

‘My daughter has been at Unit One Kids for a couple of months and despite my initial worries about whether she would settle, she has done so brilliantly. The staff are all so friendly and nurturing. I receive regular updates throughout the day via the Nursery Story app including nappy changes, meals/snacks, naps and observations of what’s she’s been doing, which is always lovely to see. Thank you Niki and the rest of the team.’

Food
At Unit One Kids, we provide a healthy morning and afternoon snack each day to keep your little ones energised and nourished.
Our snacks include a variety of wholesome options such as fresh fruit, yoghurt, rice cakes, pancakes, and other nutritious choices.
We ask that children bring their own packed lunch from home, which our team is happy to heat up and serve at mealtime. We take allergies and dietary needs very seriously, and we’re committed to catering for all individual requirements to ensure every child is safe, healthy, and well-fed throughout the day.

Our Rooms and Age Groups
Our nursery is thoughtfully designed around three age-appropriate rooms, each offering the right balance of care, challenge, and exploration.

Little Bobbins (9 months – 2 years)
A calm, nurturing, home-from-home environment where babies and toddlers feel safe, loved, and secure. Routines are built around comfort, connection, and curiosity, helping each child feel settled and confident. Through sensory play, music, and early communication activities, children begin to explore the world around them at their own pace, supported by caring and familiar adults who know them well.
Busy Spinners (2 – 3 years)
A lively, hands-on space for growing independence and imagination. Here, children develop confidence through play, group activities, and daily routines. Language, physical coordination, and early social skills are nurtured through stories, creative exploration, and outdoor play.

Weavers (3+ years)
Our preschool room focuses on preparing children for school and beyond. Through themed learning, storytelling, and problem-solving, children build early literacy, numeracy, and communication skills. They gain confidence, independence, and a love of learning—ready to take their next step into Reception.

How you can support at home
Simple, everyday moments make a big difference. Talking, reading, playing, and exploring together at home helps children build language, confidence, and curiosity. We provide ideas and resources so learning continues beyond the nursery day.

School Readiness
Our approach supports every child to become independent, confident, and eager to learn. From developing listening and self-care skills to building curiosity and social confidence, we help children feel ready and excited for their next adventure at school. Before moving on to Reception, each child receives an EYFS School Transition Summary to ensure a smooth and positive start.
